ALLERGENS

 

The way allergens are labelled on prepacked food is changing because of new regulations. The Food Information Regulations (FIR) is coming into force 13th December 2014 – this introduces a requirement that food businesses must provide information about the allergenic ingredients that they sell or provide.

 

At Devon Fresh we have indicated on the product itself or on the header of the products eg breads, dairy and eggs.

 

The 14 major allergens are listed below:

  1. Celery – this includes celeriac.
  2. Cereals containing gluten eg.wheat, rye, barley, and oats, flour.
  3. Crustaceans eg. Crabs, lobsters, prawns and scampi.
  4. Eggs eg. cakes, mayonnaise, mousses, pasta, quiche, and pastries.
  5. Fish eg. fish sauces, pizzas, salad dressings, Worcestershire sauce.
  6. Lupin – is a flower, but it is also used as lupin flour and seeds and can be used in some bread.
  7. Milk. eg. butter, cheese, cream, milk powders and yogurt.
  8. Molluscs eg. snails, mussels, squid, whelks, oyster sauce.
  9. Mustard. eg. curries, marinades, meat products, salad dressings.
  10. Nuts eg. almonds, cashew, hazelnuts. They will also be in, marzipan, biscuits and cakes.
  11. Peanuts.eg. They are often used in biscuits, cakes, curries, sauces.
  12. Sesame Seeds eg. rolls or can be found in houmous, breadsticks and tahini.
  13. Soya eg. soya protein, soya flour, tofu, and may be in desserts, ice cream.
  14. Sulphur Dioxide / Sulphites eg. wine, soft drinks, beer, dried fruit – apricots, raisins or prunes.
